SONOMA MOUNTAIN ESTATE WINES

LAUREL GLEN - After seven years of supplying grapes to other Sonoma wineries, we produced our first wine in 1981. Each year, the deepest and most ageworthy lots are blended to become Laurel Glen. Fermentation is in open top fermenters with hand punching of the cap, gentle handling emphasizing gravity flow, and 22 months' ageing in mostly new Nevers oak barrels. Production ranges from 400 to 2400 six-packs, depending on the quality of the vintage. Laurel Glen is renowned for its ability to develop complexity over time, and (unlike many California cabernets) may give the greatest pleasure after 5 - 10 years of cellaring.

COUNTERPOINT was introduced in 1987 to accommodate those vineyard lots more suited to earlier drinking and demanding of less cellar time. Like its big brother, Counterpoint is dark, deeply fruited, and delicious, with a juicy acidity and mature tannins. Counterpoint's a regular feature of wine by the glass programs in the US and a perennial favorite in Europe.

2004 Laurel Glen, Estate Cabernet Sonoma Mountain

The 2004 has indeed retained the density and mouthfeel Tanzer describes, but it has subsequently taken on an integration and balance typical of Laurel Glen. And it is no longer the ?big lout? it once was. I predict that the 2004 will be recognized as one of the five finest Laurel Glens ever made, and one that should age through the decades. That said, I have enjoyed several bottles recently, and there is no reason to wait years to enjoy it!

2005 Counterpoint, Estate Cabernet Sonoma Mountain

Compared to the exceptionally early 2004 vintage, the first pick of the 2005 vintage began a full month later, in early October. Where the 2004 vintage yielded full-throttle ripeness, the 2005 vintage is not surprisingly more restrained, and, frankly, more representative of our house style.
