ZaZin
Since the 2002 vintage, ZaZin has alternated between over-the-top and somewhat more classic in style. Now, of course, “classic” is a term to be taken in context. We’re talking about zinfandel from Lodi here. Everything is big out there at the head of the Sacramento River delta, from the robust German heritage of the original farmers, to the mighty trunks of the hundred year old vines at the foot of the Sierras, to the ultra ripe growing conditions, to the temperature swings between warm days and cool nights.
So, while the 2006 vintage may be more “classic” than its 2004 predecessor (remember that we didn’t produce a ZaZin in 2005), it is hardly restrained. Black is the operative descriptor: black in color, juicy black fruit nose, and black tar and berry mouth. The flavors are bold and concentrated, yet still bright and racy, with just a whiff of white pepper to add an exotic touch.
In 2006, we added in some younger zinfandel to the ancient vines to punch up the fruit flavors. Of course, we’re not exactly talking about young zinfandel, since the age of the “younger” vines is over fifty years!
This wine matches beautifully with grilled meats, substantial pastas, dried cheeses, and other hearty fare.
