Winemakers notes Vale la Pena 2006

Our first vintage in Mendoza  - 1998, was an unmitigated disaster. If it wasn't frost and hail, it was rain and resulting rot. Those vineyards that weren't completely destroyed never ripened adequately. The history of Mendoza is littered with such disasters, so much so that experienced growers calculate losing one vintage in five. Oddly, since 2000, while hail continues to wipe out large swathes of vineyards each year, we haven't seen the wholesale destruction of the old days. All the subsequent years have been good to excellent.

And 2006 is the most exceptionally excellent of them all. It was the sort of vintage winemakers dream about: moderate heat from beginning to end, no frost, no rain, no hail, perfect ripening, mature tannins, huge color, low tonnage, ripe and deep fruit, and so on……. The above glasses contain each lot of wine we made in the vintage from Terra Rosa to Vale la Pena; and you see the remarkable color in each lot, from the usually moderately pigmented tempranillo to the most intense malbec.

Vale la Pena is a single vineyard wine, 100% malbec, which is grown in our top vineyard in the south of Mendoza at 1050 meters of elevation. From this 60 year old vineyard we select the best of the best, age it in new French Taransaud barrels for eighteen months, and bottle a mere 500 cases.
