The soils are a mixture of ancient marine deposits overlain with volcanic material: reddish, rocky and quite shallow—about 18 to 30 inches in depth. These thin, rocky, complex soils promote efficient water drainage and restrain excess vigor. As a result, production is low, typically two to three tons per acre.
