Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate
Since 1968, our Sonoma Mountain estate has produced memorable Cabernet Sauvignon of the highest possible quality. With our flagship Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet, we seek to provide pure and authentic Cabernet Sauvignon to wine enthusiasts looking for a sense of place in their wines.
Viticulturist Phil Coturri led our transition to organic farming beginning in 2011. In addition to developing a comprehensive schedule of cover crops, he updated the vineyard’s trellising system and pruning practices. He began dramatically limiting irrigation and for the last four seasons Laurel Glen Vineyard, with a few exceptions, has been dry farmed. Today, the changes we’ve made to farming and winemaking have already made a difference to wine quality and the health of the vineyard.
In the winery, winemaker Randall Watkins introduced many quality oriented refinements, not least of which are cluster and berry sorting at harvest to increase opulence and polish.
2013 Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2013 Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful illustration of the years of work we’ve put into elevating practices in the vineyard and winery. A mild winter led to an early bud break in which the vines did not set a big crop. Spring and summer weather were just right: not too hot, not too cold. Even though harvest was early, because of the early bud break, there was plenty of time for great flavor development. Technically 2013 was a drought year. The rain we did get, though, came at just the right times and thus its possible the vines never realized there was a drought. We did water one block of the vineyard once. It was the 1st time we had irrigated any part of the vineyard since 2010. Picking began about ten days earlier than in 2012, on September 25th. Yields were lighter than average and similar to 2012, about 2.4 tons per acre. The quality of the fruit was exceptional. Justly lauded, the 2013 vintage yielded grapes with intense concentration and beautiful aromatics. We bottled 1,030 9L cases in July 2015.
“Beautiful purple inky color, with clean raspberry and cassis nose. A little sweet ripeness on the attack and medium bodied flavor that leaves a soft lush finish that lingers just long enough. Tannins are smooth and polished, ready to drink now, or hold for a good number of years.”
